Why it matters? It’s history after all, right?
I have often found such stories deep and inspiring at a personal level. Yes, it is history after all. But the benefits are in both the present and future. My thoughts on this —
It is one of the fastest ways of understanding how a product works: It is easier to understand the working of a camera if you know how it started with just a pinhole. The same goes with bicycle (starting with just two wheels), war submarine (starting with a spherical bowl large enough to have a man inside), and many others.
It encourages thinking from basic principles: Be it a complex Formula 1 car or an MRI machine, the fundamental principles are quite always very simple. The "current” product may seem extremely daunting, but once you understand the origin story the overall product seems to fit neatly in the overall picture.
Inspiration from the journey: This is my personal favorite. The very thought that a DSLR camera can be linked to a simple box with a small pinhole, brings a thrill and a kind of sensation that is hard to describe. It keeps my energy levels up and positive.
A tribute to the past greats: I see it as a way of remembering all those people who contributed in their own ways in making my life better. They didn’t owe me anything and, still I am benefiting from their work.
